The Boltons is a prestigious and exceptionally exclusive street and garden square of lens shape located in the Brompton district of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London. Known for its grand, white-fronted Victorian houses arranged around a private central garden, The Boltons is among the most sought-after residential addresses in the capital. The name derives from William Bolton, who purchased the land in the late 18th century.
Over the years, The Boltons has been home to a number of distinguished residents, including American actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (No. 28), novelist and former politician Jeffrey Archer (No. 24A), lyricist Sir William Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan fame, and singer Madonna, who owned a property there between 1999 and 2006. Other notable figures include politician Sir Julian Ridsdale and Dame Paddy Ridsdale, believed to have inspired the character of Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond novels, as well as Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind and actor-manager Otho Stuart. Today, The Boltons remains a symbol of historic elegance and enduring prestige within London’s most desirable residential enclave.
